Wisden to ’cap’ S.A. cricketers

NZPA London Wisden, the authoritative cricket almanac, will grant test status to South Africans playing against the unofficial English touring team in the present series of four-day matches. The decision, announced in a newspaper article by Wisden s editor, John Woodcock, is certain to be seen as a controversial one. particularly in India, Pakistan, and the West Indies. For the last 12 years South African teams have been confined to domestic cricket

as a result of the international isolation of South African sport in protest against the republic's apartheid policies. Mr Woodcock, who is covering the matches in South Africa for “The Times," wrote: "As editor of Wisden I can say now that those South Africans who win their caps this month will be entered in the almanac as having done so. in the same way as are the Englishmen who played in England in 1970 against the Rest of the World."
