Wanganui wool firm
PA Wanganui Good length fleece was very firm, better style second-shear fleece unchanged, and all else in buyers’ favour yesterday at the Wanganui wool sale' according to the official report. The Wool Board bid on 7 per cent of the offering and bought 1 per cent. The main competition was from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the Far East, with moderate support from Japanese and New Zealand mills; ' The 14,697 bales of greasy wool was 38 per cent earlyshorn and second-shean 24 per cent lambs' wool, 22 per cent ewe fleece, and the usual oddments. • • . The new season’s autumn shears were , generally of good colour; Some lines of lambs’ wool lacked shed preparation and were discounted. Auctioneers had to keep the buying gallery up to tfue valuations at times, with sev-
eral buyers attempting to bring prices down, especially on lots not being sold by sample. One line of second-shear ewe fleece was opened on a bid of 215 c and moved slowly up in lc bids until, after a flurry of bidding, the six-bale lot sold at 249 c, showing the true valuation buyers had put on it. This type of buying slowed the sale considerably, auctioneers averaging 249 lots an hour against a normal pace of 350 to 400 lots. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 265.12 c a kilogram. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 20.7 per cent will apply, to all wool sold at’ the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight on Thursday to. midnight on March 18. ' The market indicator was 261 C. Official range of prices: Medium Crossbred, 46,'505: Good 280 to 292
