Tekau to regroup
PA Ashburton The activities of Tekau Knitwear. Ltd. will be consolidated at Ashburton after April 8 when the company's Timaru factory closes. The Ashburton mill will take over the cut. make, and trim work at present done in Timaru on fabrics produced in Ashburton. The manufacture of knitted fabrics in Ashburton will be wound down and some staff at Timaru will be offered transfers to Ashburton. • The consolidation of the company in Ashburton was
announced this morning by Mr Athol Hutton, the managing director of Tekau's parent company, Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating. Ltd. Tekau Knitwear has traded unprofitably in recent years, and in 1979 the activities in the Timaru factory were curtailed in a major restructuring programme. In a statement, Mr Hutton said Waitaki had been heavily committed to supporting Tekau in the expectation that the moves taken would lead it back to profitability. A redundancy agreement will be negotiated with the relevant unions.
