Clover import plan comes under fire
Permission by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to allow overseas strains of white clover into New Zealand- has been described as “high handed and irresponsible” by the chairman of the agriculture section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers, Mr F. A. Bull. The decision has subsequently been stalled, but Mr Bull sees dangers for New Zealand if white clov. r is allowed into the country. “The decision by the M.A.F may have been as a result cf pressure from O.E.C.D. (Organisation for Economic and Cultural De-
velopment) ■ countries but I ’ believe the almost certain outcome for New Zealand’s white clover exports would be disastrous and irretrievable,” Mr Bull said at last Friday’s meeting of the agriculture section executive. “While admitting that New Zealand agriculture benefits from the importation of some overseas seed lines, I must emphasise that this country has a valuable export trade in white clover seed and to jeopardise the future of this market by the introduction of foreign strains would be foolhardy to say the least,” he said.
