Lending to Rumania
Sir,—M. T. Moore’s letter (March 6) merely underlines the point that borrowing when you do not have the ability to repay is suicidal, whether as an individual or a nation. Communist systems fail miserably when it comes to the necessities of life. Witness .Russia, once the breadbasket of Europe, now dependent on imports of grain to feed her people (and her armies). The communists do not produce enough to pay their bills. What would happen to the communist hierarchy if the Western growers of this grain withheld their produce? Does Mr Moore really believe they would survive? It is very pertinent to heed the deficits of Western countries, because the size of the deficit is in direct proportion to the amount of State control — something we in New Zealand are all suffering a surfeit of. Like the Chinese, our real hardships are those inflicted on us by a too powerful government—Yours, etc., MILES JASON. March 10, 1982.
