Clyde high dam
Sir,—The Planning Tribunal in 1980 was delayed deliberately until the smelter project had been lined up or, as Mr Birch would have it: “the advent of the smelter made it appropriate to bring the power projects forward.” (“The Press,” January 31, 1981). The tribunal established that the “urgency” of the smelter was the justification for the high dam and the destruction of the Cromwell Gorge orchards and a slice of history. In February, 1981, an appeal was lodged against the high dam. This appeal will be heard in Christchurch on March 15. “Construction work is well advanced,” the M.O.W. recently boasted. A fair description of the past year’s feverish activity (surely illegal until the case is decided) aimed at presenting a high dam fait accompli. During the election the Prime Minister emphasised there was no other use for Clutha electricity except the smelter. Where is the smelter? Where is the “urgency”? What more appropriate for a 3 per cent chop than the high dam?—Yours, etc.,
