TV repeats figures

PA Wellington Repeat programmes made up as much as 75 per cent of afternoon television viewing during January, the Minister of Broadcasting (Dr Shearer) has said. Dr Shearer gave the information in a letter to the. member of Parliament for Papanui, Mr M. K. Moore, formerly Opposition spokesman on broadcasting. Dr Shearer said that in December the percentage of repeats, excluding news and sports coverage, was 27 per cent of programmes transmitted on both chan- ■ nels. Most repeats were screened outside the evening peak viewing time of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. “During the main holiday period in January, this figure increased substantially to an average of 50 per cent of material screened between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., and as high as 75 per cent for afternoon viewing.”

Dr Shearer also said that survey figures indicated that two or the most popular programmes were: repeats: “Fawlty Towers” and “Some Mothers Do ’Av ’Em,” which both drew in excess of 1.1 million viewers in the week beginning January 16.
