Gardening winners
The prize-winners in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Memorial Avenue garden competition have been announced. The judges for the competition, Mr R. Proctor, Mr J. F. Walsh, and Mrs H. Tait, said that drought had been trying for gardeners but that some excellent results had been achieved. The aggregate points of the spring and summer judging determined the winners in the respective sections. G. H. Thornton and Mrs Thornton, of 356 Memorial Avenue, were named the over-all winners. Second place went to N. F. Holland and Mrs Holland of 281 Memorial Avenue, and J. F. McPhail and Mrs McPhail, of 386 Memorial Avenue, were third. Section winners were: Clyde Road to Ham Road: T. J. Davis, 56 Memorial Avenue. Ham Road to Greers Road: M. Noy, 120 Memorial Avenue. Greers Road to Grahams Road: T. M. Wilkins, 224 Memorial Avenue. Grahams Road to Kendal Avenue: N. F. Holland, 281 Memorial Avenue. Kendal Avenue to Roydvale Avenue: G. H. Thornton. 356 Memorial Avenue. Roydvale Avenue to the airport: J. F. McPhail, 386 Memorial Avenue. Best non-residential garden: Airport surroundings, 1; Commodore Motor Inn and White Heron Hotel, highly commended. Picture, page 21.
