Givenchy tough opponent for southern mares at Trentham

By J. J. BOYLE Givenchy might be a rugged stumbling block for three of the South Island’s most talented mares in the DB 1600, second leg of the Wellington Racing Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

The South Island hopefuls are The Twinkle, winner of the corresponding race a year ago: Powley, whose record at 1600 m on the course is a win and two seconds; and The Dimple, which was luckless in the running over the same distance last Saturday.

Givenchy has won four of his last six races, was third in another, and unplaced after getting a wretched run in the Wellington George Adams Handicap.

Two of those wins were the Adams Mile at Ellerslie and the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham. Ray Verner has dodged handicap races with the four-year-old on the present campaign at Trentham. Givenchy was pointed for the -weight-for-age North Island Challenge Stakes last Saturday and won the historic race soundly at cramped odds. Powley fought like a tigress for her second to Hikotere last Saturday. She showed no signs of wilting, but the pattern running through most of her campaigns away from home is that she comes up better with a race, and she will again be a formidable adversary for them all tomorrow.

This time, also, she is less likely to be left out in the open. Her No. 6 barrier will give her rider Jim Pankhurst a chance to become nicely positioned, and still leave room for manoeuvre, which was denied rails huggers like The Dimple last week and Givenchy in the Adams Mile in January. The Twinkle was unplaced when favourite in the Air New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie last week, but that 2000 m weight-for-age test could have found her too fresh, and carrying more condition than she normally does when she campaigns closer to home. It would be more in character for this talented mare to reach one of the places this time. The Dennis Brothers will

be looking to The Imposter to fill the role of trail-blazer for his half-sisters on tomorrow's programme. The Imposter (by Causeur) goes after the New Zealand St Leger Stakes, and without some of the three-year-old summer stars in the line-up he merits some attention. He clinched a start in the classic by winning over 1800 m in style at Riccarton last month. Race 1 12.5 PALLISER HIGHWEIGHT $3375; 2200 m. 1 4111 Focal Point 7 68.0 G.
