Fishermen rescued

Two fishermen adrift in a liferaft were rescued after a three-hour search off the mouth of the Ashburton River late last evening. The pair were from the 13m Timaru fishing boat Marina, but it was not known last evening whether the boat had sunk. Both were reported fit and well after being picked up by another Timaru fishing boat. The search started after three Mid-Canterbury farmers spotted two flares. Fishing boats were told to search an area off the Canterbury bight east of Ashburton and the men were picked up shortly before midnight. Seas were light and the winds moderate. The fishing boat with the rescued fishermen was due to arrive in Timaru at 3 a.m. this morning.
