N.Z. art proves popular
NZPA staff correspondent London A collection of early New Zealand topographical watercolours and drawings proved popular when they were offered at auction at the London rooms of Sotheby’s. In all, 22 works were up for auction, coming mostly from individual private owners in Britain and Europe. The top price of $2760 was fetched by an album of water-colours of views in New Zealand by T. Octavius Hurt. The album of 65 watercolours over pencil, mostly of South Island scenes, was compiled by Octavius Hurt during his stay in New Zealand from 1861 to 1871. It was sold to a private buyer. Of the total of 22 lots, seven were unsold and four went to New Zealand buyers. Massey University bought a series' of four lithographs
by V. A. Chapman (“Lake. Taupo, North Island”) for $782; and by Major M. Bullock (“The White Terraces of Rotomahana, North Island”) for $460.
