Racist insults led to killing
NZPA-Reuter Birmingham Dee Nayer, a Coloured (mixed race) South African who killed a neighbour’s wife with a machete in a rage over repeated racist insults, was acquited of murder yesterday and given a suspended sentence for manslaughter. The judge, Mr Justice Hirst, told him: “I am satisfied that you are normally a peaceable, hard-working citi-
zen and a good neighbour and that the terrible events that occurred were the culmination of a build-up of racial tension between you and your neighbours which was not of your choosing.” Mr Nayer, aged 44, killed Mrs Margaret Barnes after a fight between his son and hers. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault and was given a suspended two-year sentence.
