New-look shield

PA Wellington Wellington will defend a new-look Ranfurly Shield this rugby season. The coveted trophy, donated by the Earl of Ranfurly for competition on a challenge basis from 1902, has had a much-needed facelift. The New Zealand Rugby Football Union decided that the battered “log of wood” needed repairing and a Wellington jeweller and rugby administrator, Doug Paris, has done the job.

He removed all the metal parts to remove the dents and scratches, revarnished the woodwork, replated the silverware. and added more of the small shields. The biggest change is that in the scene engraved on the shield of men playing rugby. The shield has always shown

players using a round ball and Mr Paris has removed this and replaced it with- a rugby ball. The scene apparently depicted the first game of rugby which was played with a soccer ball. The work by Mr Paris took about 10 days and has made a big difference to the appearance of the trophy: “It was in a really bad condition because people had not looked after it.” he said.
