Abbey service
PA London Commonwealth nations were reminded at Westminster Abbey yesterday of their commitment to the Gleneagles Agreement. The occasion was the annual Commonwealth Day service at the Abbey. The speaker was the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev. Dr Edward Carpenter. His reference to the Gleneagles Agreement opposing sports contacts with South Africa was the only mention of the controversies now shaking the Commonwealth, including the rebel English cricket tour of South Africa and the threatened Afro-
Asian boycott of the Commonwealth Games at Brisbane. Dr Carpenter said declara-. tions at Commonwealth conferences at Singapore, Gleneagles, Lusaka, and Melbourne were reflected in the affirmations given to the Commonwealth at the service. These concerned justice, equality, and peace between all men regardless of colour, class, or creed. Dr Carpenter’s audience included the Queen and heads of diplomatic missions of most of the 46 Commonwealth member nations.
