Navy on way to rescue rowers
PA Auckland A navy survey craft, H.M.N.Z.S. Takapu, was yes--, terday sent to rescue the’ round-New Zealand rowers',Max Dedkind, aged 31, and Steve Harre aged 32. The brothers who were yesterday being swept in a westerly, direction 225 miles off theS' coast of Kaitaia, reported being desperately short of food and water. Row -f- organisers approached the Navy for help after the brothers’ waterdistilling apparatus broke down on Sunday evening. The pair were due to run out of/food tomorrow. A Nlyy spokesman said it had been decided to pick the
rowers up before’a full-scale search and rescue effort became necessary. A 4 friend of the rowers,, the Rev. Murray Spackman, said both men were in good heart and determined to ..attempt the row again, probably next year. “They are definitely keen to have another attempt. The distiller’s breaking down was really the last straw for them. . The Navy craft should reach the rowers some time today. Meanwhile, a national fund-raising campaign for the rowers launched last week is going slowly. Row organisers face a deficit of more than $20,000.
