Chile would buy N.Z. coal — Air head
PA Auckland Chile would buy at least as much New Zealand coking coal as Japan if the trade union ban on Chilean trade was lifted, said the chairman of Air New Zealand, Mr R. A. Owens, yesterday. Mr Owens, who will lead a New Zealand trade delegation to South America next week, said problems with coal sales to Japan could be alleviated with sales to Chile. “The trade unions are cut-
ting’ off their nose to spite their face,” he said. Mr Owens said that when he was last in Chile he was presented with a number of tenders for coking coal which would have been a big boost for the West Coast mines, the Railways, and New Zealand shipping. American suppliers had agreed oh a price which was almost the same as New Zealand coal. “Chile would provide us with an ideaal market,” Mr Owens said. “It is almost the same sea distance as Japan, and it could be carried in New Zealand ships. . “It would be-the unions who would benefit — the miners, railwaymen, and sea-, men,” Mr Owens said’/
