Plane lands on beach
Blenheim reporter The pilot of a light aircraft made a faultless forced landing on Wharanui Beach, a short/distance south of the Waima River, near Ward, at 9.15 a.m. on Monday. None of the four occupants were injured, and there was no structural damage to the aircraft, a Cherokee Arrow. Mr T. D. Dick, of Bells Road, West Melton, was flying from Christchurch to Wellington when he lost oil pressure as a result of a broken pipe. The oil sprayed over the cockpit window and he was forced to land on the stretch of sandy beach. Mr Dick got help from a local farmer, Mr P. C. Murray, who towed the Cherokee into a paddock. An aircraft mechanic flew north from Christchurch and, with spare parts from Blenheim, made repairs.on the spot. By 2.15 p.m., the aircraft was on its way back, to Christchurch. With Mr Dick were his parents, Mr and Mrs T. F. Dick, of Mays Road, Christchurch, and Mr David Gadsby, of Dipton, Southland.
