Escape from prison party

Three Paparua prisoners will appear in the District Court this morning to face several charges relating to an escape yesterday afternoon.

The three men were part of prison work party when, they attacked their guard and made off on foot towards the West Coast Road.

The guard, Joseph Wright, is reported in a satisfactory condition in Christchurch Hospital suffering from head and arm injuries.

Once the three men had reached the road they flagged down a car and forced the driver from the vehicle. The trio then headed towards the West Coast.

Operations control at Christchurch police headquarters was able to keep track of the three escapers thanks to the assistance of Malvern County Council and Ministry of Works and Development staff who were working on the road and were equipped with two-way radio sets in their vehicles.

Policemen were sent from Otira to intercept the escaping trio. The prisoners abandoned their car between Cass and Bealey when they ran off the road down a bank trying to evade an on-coming police car.

The three headed across country but were captured half way up the side of a hill soon after, with the aid of tracker dogs.
