Sanction for clean-air loan sought
Sanction to raise a $300,000 clean-air loan to help Christchurch city residents convert from open fires to electric heating will be sought by the City Council. Although the Government will pay $300,000 and the council’s Municipal Electricity Department $lOO,OOO to finance the loan scheme, Local Authority Loans Board sanction is still required. Yesterday, the policy and finance committee said that. the sanction should , be sought. The council proposed
the interest-free loan assistance scheme last year, and it was approved by the Government in September. Loan assistance will be similar to aid offered for home insulation and domestic solar water heaters. Homeowners will be encouraged to convert from open fires to permanently connected, thermostatically controlled electric heaters in Christchurch. clean-air zone. Loan applications may be available from the City Council next month.
