10 years jail for dealing in drugs
PA Napier A Hastings man. aged 30, has been sentenced to 10 years jail on each of five charges relating to the Class A controlled drug, D.M.A. Mr Justice Greig, in the High Court at Napier, described Alexander Shewan, a script-writer, as one of the biggest suppliers of D.M.A. to come before a court in New Zealand. Shewan had admitted six charges — four of supplying D.M.A., conspiring with others to supply D.M.A., and .possessing a Class' A controlled drug, L.S.D. His Honour said that Shewan was involved in a network for 18 months. This involved a large area of New Zealand “and, more importantly, it involved a very large amount of drugs, as much as 25,000 trips." He accepted that Shewan’s possession of L.S.D. was for Shewan's own use and that he had not been involved in dealing with that drug. His Honour said it was to Shewan’s credit that he had pleaded guilty to the charges at an early stage and had assisted the police with their inquiries. He had also been in custody since early October. . However, there had to be a penalty which recorded the view of the Court and the community in respect. of 1 such substantial, wide-scale dealing. Mr P. S. Coles, for Shewan, said that his client had intended to get out of drugdealing. Shewan had been a druguser since he left high school.
but was on his way out of the organisation. ' His Honour sentenced Shewan to two years jail on the L.S.D. charge, and 10 years jail on each of the five remaining charges, the jail terms to be concurrent. David Thorburn Hannay, aged 20, unemployed, of Napier, to whom Shewan had admitted supplying D.M.A., was sentenced to four years
jail on a charge of supplying a Class A controlled drug, D.M.A., between April 2, 1981, and October 2, 1981. He had admitted the charge. His Honour said that he regarded Hannay as a substantial retailer in the drug,; and not as a wholesaler. Hannay had told the police that he had sold 2000 “trips” over a six-mpnth period. ; /
