Blenheim protest planned

The Campaign Against Foreign Control in New Zealand will organise a protest near the site of the proposed United States Navy observatory at Black Birch, near Blenheim, on March 20-21. Activities planned will include distributing leaflets in Blenheim on Saturday, March 20, followed by a public meeting that evening. On the Sunday some form of protest activity is planned at the site, or as near as possible to the planned site of the observatory. Protesters from

Christchurch are expected to take part, as well as people from Wellington, Nelson, and Blenheim. The campaign has not set out to organise a big national demonstration. The aim is simply to raise the issue in the town nearest the site, to focus attention on the issue, and to educate those taking part, said Mr Murray Horton, a spokesman for the group. "We are not expecting large numbers, but if they materialise so much the better,” he said.
