Comfort after loss
A disconsolate Angel Gimenez is comforted by the Spanish tennis team captain, Manuel Santana, after losing the deciding rubber to Russell Simpson, of New Zealand, in the Davis Cup tie at Wilding Park yesterday. The little Spaniard wept
openly after slipping from a winning position to a five-set loss to the determined Simpson. This gave the tie to New Zealand by three matches to two, ensuring that the side would play in the Davis Cup quarter-finals in July. A crowd of 3200 watched a
fascinating struggle as Spain fought back from a deficit of two rubbers on the first day to level the scores with wins in the doubles and the first reverse singles. Then Simpson, who was thrust into the limelight through Chris Lewis’s training accident, turned up trumps for New Zealand with the excellence of his serve and volley game, which brought him victory in both his singles.
