Nine die in tanker explosion
NZPA .New York An empty tanker exploded yesterday about 1400 km east of Bermuda and nine crewmen were believed dead, the United States Coast Guard has reported. Sixteen crew members of the Golden Dolphin were rescued by a Swedish merchant vessel, the Norrland. shortly after the afternoon explosion, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
The captain of the Golden Dolphin, who was among the survivors, told officials that the nine men believed killed were working “inside the tank" when the explosion occurred. The cause of the blast was unknown, officials said. The Coast Guard said no formal search for the nine missing crew members was expected because "there are not expected to be any survivors" other than the 16 rescued. The Norrland was diverted to the scene after the Coast Guard received a distress call from the Golden Dolphin at 2.45 p.m. and later was joined by a Yugoslavian vessel, the Nova Gorcia. The 45.000-tonne Golden Dolphin, owned by ApexMarine Corporation of New York, was sailing from NewOrleans to Port Said. Egypt.
