Trophy decided oh penalties

PA Dunedin Two hours of hard running soccer were still not enough to produce..a winner' of the Adidas ‘ Challenge Trophy yesterday at the Caledonian Ground, Dunedin, and it took a fine save by Bob Wilshire in the deciding penalty kicks at the end, for Wellington Diamond United to triumph .over Dunedin City. In the thirty-third minute it was Glubb who dragged defenders to the right before chipping across to Pat Berry, The goalkeeper Wilshire dived full length to palm Berry's header on to the upright, but the ball broke to George Caird who scored with a well-executed shot on the turn.

. Then just as thoughts were ; turning towards half-time, Diamond had its running striker, Jack Winter, latch on to a quick throw-in and as he turned in tbe box, referee Arthur Edwards spotted an infringement, and awarded a penalty kick. Diamond’s captain Jeff Strom gave the Dunedin goalkeeper Jim Taylor, no chance, as he stroked in the equaliser. The second half left the score unchanged. Dunedin City 1 (George Caird), Wellington Diamond United 1 (Jeff Strom, penalty). WDU won 5-4 on penal- . ties, after extra time produced no more goals. ’
