Young wins 37th title
“I really ought to do some training,” said the "first lady” of New Zealand athletics. Vai Young (Canterbury), after having won the New Zealand discus championship for a record eighteenth time on Saturday. Her comment was prompted by the closeness of her challengers. Young, who has now won 37 New Zealand titles in a career spanning more than 25 years, won the title with her first throw of 44.90 m. She said, “I had hoped to improve on this but it was not to be. I am a bit disap-
pointed with the distance but I have no excuses." Sally Mene (Canterbury), a former title-holder who is in semi-retirement, surprisinly won the silver medal on a countback from Jan Bishop (Canterbury). Both were credited with 44.08 m. , Bishop, the winner in a number of contests with Young and Mene this summer, nearh won the gold medal with her final throw. The distance looked to be the best of the contest but she fouled the edge of the circle and the distance was not measured.
