Fencing pools

Sir,—The controversial remarks of Cr O. T. Alpers, regarding the fencing of private swimming pools in Heathcote County, need to be closely examined. His statements, (“The Press,” March 1) “that if the national statistics on the number df children drowned in private pools were applied to Heathcote County, only one child was likely to drown in 40 years. To enclose private swimming pools is an awful lot of fencing just to achieve the saving of that life.” Cr Alpers’ attitude is totally unacceptable, especially to the ratepayers of Heathcote County who have young children. His concern for the pockets of the ratepayers apparently outweighs his concern for the lives of their children. With the increase of private pools in the area -his conclusion that only one child in 40 years is likely to drown is highly questionable. Sixty per cent of young children who drown do so in private pools, making the bylaw for fencing pools a necessity.—Yours, etc., P. E. CREED. March 2, 1982.
