National rodeo finals

A crowd of between six and seven thousand people attended the national rodeo finals held in Methven last Saturday. ■> The highlight of the day was the first ■ bull riding event in which only three of the ten cowboys managed to ride their bulls, in spite of some potentially dangerous moments the only injuries were a broken leg, suffered by a cowboy who fell, and a pulled ligament on a bull. Other difficulties arose during the steer wrestling events because of the size and strength of the steers. In the end the event became a test of strength between the cowboy and the steer instead of a test’of skill.

Australia’s top bull fighting clown, Graham Borghero. delighted the crowd with his antics while also putting in some serious work distracting angry bulls from fleeing cowboys. Another figure to make an impression on the crowd was Lisa Latta, aged 13, probably the youngest competitor ever in the ladies’ event. She was placed third in the ladies' barrel race.

The national titles for the event were decided on the winnings of each competitor for the whole season, therefore the winner On the day did not necessarily take the title. Each event had prize money totalling $l6OO and the national winner also received a $2OO trophy belt buckle and a saddle worth about $lOOO.
