Paparua rubbish bins being ‘badly abused’
Rubbish bins in- some parts of Paparua County had been badly ’abused, the Paparua Rural District Council was told Recent incidents had included sheep entrails being left in a bin as well as a sack of rotten potatoes which two workers could barely lift from the bin. The contractor who upliftsthe bags from the bins in rural areas of the county has reported to the council that almost twice as many bags as expected had been left in the bins. “We are experiencing some major problems' with this rural rubbish collection.” said the chairman, Mr A. Y. Shuker. Residents from outside the county were using the bins, some of which had fallen into disrepair, he said. He was particularly concerned about the sheep entrails, which he believed might have been the action of a Tai Tapu farmer. Cr A. J. D. Morton disputed this assertion, saying it could have been done by a sheep stealer.
A letter from the rubbish
contractor said that up. to 1000 bags were uplifted each week, almost twice the expected number of 570 bags. One bin seemed .to “breed bags” and another was regularly attacked by a local dog. the contractor said. Councillors decided that some action had to be taken. The engineer for the Rural Council, Mr B. G. Green. said some bins might have to be removed or resited to combat the problem. He would discuss the matter with the contractor and residents would be told of any changes that might have.to be made. One of the bins in question is sited at the corner of Tosswell Road and Lonstaff Road, used by Prebbleton residents, and another is at the corner of Robinsons Road and Springs Road, used by Lincoln residents. The bin situated in Alstons Road recently had more than 100 bags stacked outside. Road name McLeans Island Road may be lengthened as a result of extensions to the runway at Christchurch Airport. Be-
cause of the extension. Harewood Road will have to deviate and become a loop at the top end of the runway. Councillors recommended that this deviation be renamed McLeans Island Road. If the County Council approves this recommendation. Willow Road and McArthurs Road will also be included in the new'., extended McLeans Island Road. Residents have a right to object •to the proposed name changes. Fire costs The council will probably help pay some of the running costs of the Lincoln and Rolleston volunteer fire brigades. The Ellesmere County Council sought some contribution from the council towards the running costs of the fire tankers which serve the brigades. It said the brigades made many calls in Paparua County.
Councillors recommended that $5OO be given each year towards such costs. “The money is a minimum insurance premium for the service they provide,” Mr Shuker said.
