Holy Trinity Church to celebrate anniversary

Parishioners of the Holy Trinity Church at Avonside will celebrate the 125th anniversary of their church's consecration on February 21. The parish is the biggest in the inner city, and one of the oldest. The existing building stands on the site of the original church which was consecrated in 1957 by Bishop Harper — in his first episcopal act in Christchurch. The event was attended by a “Lyttelton Times’’ reporter who wrote that the Bishop

preached "a most eloquent sermon" at the consecration. The church was then a cob and slab structure. “It has no great pretensions to architectural beauty, but is. what we should deem in England a good, plain but characteristic church," the “Lyttelton Times” reported. Nothing remains of the original structure. A stone chancel in the early gothic style was added in the 1870 s, and the cob was replaced by a stone nave in the same style early this cerjtury.

They were designed by Benjamin Mountford — his plan was to fashion the church after the Christchurch Cathedral, complete with tower. But the architects departed from his design, abam doning the tower and building a rounded apse instead of a square chancel. The building was unchanged until after World i War II when parishioners began raising funds towards

improving it. It was to be dedicated as a peace memorial. The church, as it stands today, was completed in 1954. Alterations have been made since to the interior. Modern stained glass windows were fitted in the west wall in 1980. Facing them on the east wall, and providing a dramatic contrast in styles, are windows dating from 1871. The church is noted for its

graveyard which contains the graves of some famous 1 people. Among them are Sir ' Julius von Haast. the explorer after whom the Haast I Pass was named. William j Rolleston, an early provin- ■ cial superintendent, and I Joseph Brittan, who gave i Linwood its name — he ' came from Linwood in Hampshire, England. The anniversary will be \ marked by a service in ' which former vicars of the parish will lake part. 1
