Opposition parties
Sir,—l share A. Coburn’s concern for better government in New Zealand but if National did have 35 seats to the Government's 57 next time and the government represented only one party it would just be the reverse of what we have now, with the Opposition not being
able to stop any legislation and therefore being ineffective. Whereas, with three separate parties in Parliament each would get a more reasonable chance of having some of its policies through legislation which would give a better balance to the running of our country. A merger of Social Credit and Labour would not work as many Social Credit supporters are former National and would revert to that party, recreating the old 50-50 twoparty situation with a toss-up for government probably favouring National again. ’ However, I agree that friendly cooperation between opposition parties is needed, though not marriage.— Yours, etc.,
B. J. WILKINS. February 13, 1982.
