Gillies jailed for seven yrs

PA Dunedin An Alexandra man, Peter Douglas Gillies, aged 30. has been jailed for seven years for shooting a man he found in bed with his wife.

Gillies, appearing for sentence in the High Court in Dunedin yesterday before Mr Justice Casey, was earlier found guilty of the manslaughter of Thomas Craig Taggart. The jury returned a not guilty verdict on a charge of murdering Mr Taggart on October 30. He killed Mr Taggart with a .22 calibre rifle. The Court had been told that Mr Taggart had been having an affair with Gillies’s estranged wife. His Honour said he accepted that Gillies was upset by the breakdown of his marriage. There was no evidence that Gillies intended to kill Mr Taggart but he had had a lot of experience with firearms and the one he took from his car was the one which was loaded.

“You took it knowing. I think, what you were going to find.” said his Honour. When he saw Mr Taggart with his wife, he lost his selfcontrol and fired the gun twice.
