Support for wool

Sir,—Recent comments by the Minister oLAgriculture, Mr Maclntyre (“The Press,” Feb-

ruary 1), about the possibility of dumping wool which has virtually no market overseas, bring into question the Minister’s credibility on this subject. At the August meeting of the Electoral Committee, concern about the situation was expressed by members, and a move to have supplements paid on slipe wool was made, Despite strong and logical representations to the Government, it remained firm in its resolve not to alter the situation. For Mr Maclntyre to talk of a propaganda campaign to discourage farmers from sending in short wool is nonsense. A supplement on slipe wool would not have cost the taxpayer a cent more and would have avoided the distortion in the flow of stock for killing. Farmers have had enough “propaganda” from the Government. Less talk and more positive action on inflation is required. — Yours, etc.,

D. J. ARCHBOLD. February 3, 1982.
