Poland
Sir,—Much has been said about Poland and Solidarity. Not.only in New Zealand, but also in Europe, the campaign of solidarity mounted by the United States has been extensive, but not extensive enough
to allow the workers in South America to demonstrate their solidarity for their Polish brothers. The Fascist Government, supported by the United States, cannot risk allowing demonstrations of support for Poland because the South American workers cannot struggle for the rights of the Poles, without recalling that they themselves are without those same rights. They cannot demand freedom for Walesa without asking for freedom for
their own union leaders, who are imprisoned. Apart from Peru, which has a democratic Government, South America has been silent because, although the workers support their Polish brothers, they cannot show it. They are repressed by those who most use the words freedom, liberty and civil rights — the United States.—Yours, etc., CRISTINA GUERRERO. February 4, 1982.
