Base rumour denied
PA Wellington A United States Embassy spokesman yesterday discounted a report that a base was being sought for Trident nuclear submarines at Whangaroa Harbour, Northland. “There are no plans to station United States Trident submarines outside the United States and there definitely. has been no discus-
sions between., the United States and New Zealand on this subject,” the spokesman said. Rumours that the submarines would be based in Whangaroa Harbour were first sparked at an antinuclear meeting in Whangarei during last year’s election campaign.
