Red Squad parade
PA Auckland Members of the former police Red Squad paraded officially for the “clowns” yesterday dressed in the gear worn during clashes with Springbok tour protesters last year. The formal identification parade took place in the carpark of the Auckland Central police barracks between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The parade went ahead under tight security with alleys and vantage points to the car-park along Hobson Street and Vincent Street guarded by plain clothes and uniformed policemen. Members of the specially trained Red Squad were alleged to have beaten and kicked three people dressed as clowns — two men and a woman — on the Dominion Road footpath at the time of the third Springbok rugby test, at Eden Park. It was not known last evening whether the three victims identified their attackers from yesterday’s parade. Mr Jacques Monroe and his two “clown” colleagues, who have refused to be identified throughout the inquiry, could not be reached for
comment last night. Senior - Auckland policemen also declined to speak about the parade. The second male “clown” who would not be identified said late last evening that the trio had been unable to identify any of the police dressed in riot gear who allegedly batoned them.
