Territorials to train in Aust.

A group of Otago and Southland Territorial Force soldiers will take part -in training with ' a difference this month when they fly to Australia for Exercise Tasman Reserve. .

The exercise is an annual exchange of Territorial infantry regiments between Australia and New Zealand.

Representing New Zealand this time will be 120 soldiers of a rifle company of the 4th Battalion (Otago and Southland), Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. The soldiers will leave from Christchurch on Saturday and will go directly to Townsville in northern Queensland for the start of their 14-day camp.

The exercise is designed to give.practice in, mobilisation procedures and to familiarise the soldiers with each other’s tactics and weapon skills.

On arrival the soldiers will go into the Australian bush for eight days of field training. This will be followed by five days of rigorous jungle warfare training at the Australian Army’s Ist Division battle school. The New Zealand soldiers will return to Dunedin on February 23.

While the New Zealanders are’in. Australia a composite infantry company from the 11th Field Force Group and 7th Task Force, based in Queensland, will train in the North Island with the 7th Battalion, R.N.Z.I.R.
