Lyttelton to get new tug
The Lyttelton Harbour Board intends to buy a new tug. The board would soon make its required advertisement of intent to buy a new tug, estimated to cost more than $4 million, said the board’s general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail).
After the advertisement, required by law, the board would apply to the Ports Authority for permission to raise a loan. Mr McPhail said that about $1 million of thp cost could be met from reserves and the rest would have to be raised by loan. The tug would be similar to the tug Godley and, in the board’s view, would be required to handle heavy bulk carriers, such as those carrying coal exports to Japan and Korea.
