Canterbury eclipsed by scintillating batting
The touring International XI produced some scintillating batting to eclipse Canterbury by eight wickets in a women’s cricket match at Ham yesterday. Canterbury made only 130 runs in the 60-over match and the International side reached this mark with more than 27 overs to spare. The International Xi’s opening pair, Lynne Thomas and Rhonda Kendall, had a magnificent century stand, but. tragically, both were out when the team was just three runs short of its target. Thomas, a Welsh-born
double international (hockey and cricket), was first out for 35 after an opening partnership of 128 in 90min. A few balls later Kendall, an Australian, was bowled by Kay Gilray for 89 after hitting 12 fours in a sparkling innings; Kendall's 50 had come up in 47min. Runs came freely off most of the Canterbury bowlers, with Karen Gunn the notable exception. Gunn’s eight overs of medium-slow deliveries cost only 16 runs and she captured Thomas's wicket after a Margaret Francis stumping.
Earlier Canterbury had struggled throughout most of its innings which took up 55.3 overs. The opener, Jenny Olson (32), and Mary Campbell (26) were the only players to get past 20. There were three run-outs and most of the remaining damage was done by Renuka Majumdar and Sandra Braganza. Canterbury 130 from 55.3 overs (J. Olson 32. M. Campbell 26, N. Sheriff 19, S. Gardyne 11; R. Majumdar 2/ 14. S. Braganza 2/26) lost to International XI 132/2 from 32.5 overs (L. Thomas 35, R. Kendall 89).
