N.Z. refuses Ugandan role
PA Wellington New Zealand will not contribute to a Commonwealth military training team for Uganda in spite of Australia’s decision to pledge $50,000 and six personnel. The question of contribution arose from an appeal by Uganda's President (Mr Milton Obote) for collective Commonwealth assistance in training the country’s military force. Arrangements for the training team will be coordinated by the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister (Mr Tony Street) said yesterday that the Australian contribution
involved between two and six military training personnel and a financial pledge of $50,000 towards the cost of the programme. < • “The offer of personnel is contingent on the team’s being drawn from a representative group of Commonwealth countries and on satisfactory agreement being reached on conditions of service,” he said.
A spokesman for the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Cooper) said in Wellington yesterday that New Zealand had already decided against contributing. Asked if Australia’s announcement could change that decision the spokesman said it was not linked.
