Hands Down, Logan Lea dead-heat in trial

By

PAUL MEIN

Hands Down ended his preparation for the Auckland Cup meeting which starts on Saturday, dead-heating for first with Logan Lea at the Addington trials yesterday. Driven by the trainer, Derek Jones, who will drive the Armbro Del six-year-old in the Chardon Handicap, on Saturday evening. Hands Down was never extended, but was timed over his last 800 m in 60.25. and breezed over his final 400 m in 31.5 s to dead-heat with Logan Lea at the line, in a smart 3min 24.65. Mister Wood Chips, responsible for the breakneck pace, led the field into the last 600 m but broke shortly after and was one of the last to finish. The Sting, which had a nice run three back on the outer, held third, a length and a half back, with Big Idea fourth. Logan Lea will have his first start for four months in the Oamaru Handicap on Saturday.

Ansett showed race-win-ning dash, narrowly but comfortably winning the three-year-olds' heat.

The Transport Chip filly showed she will be close to peak for the Flying Fillies Series at Addington tomorrow evening, sprinting home strongly from the trail to beat the pacemaking Noble Jo by a nose in 3min 355, the last 800 m in 63.85.

Harvey’s Sister, which trailed in fifth position, made some ground late but was

four lengths from the first two.

Star Lady and Ferrari, race rivals in the Fitzgerald Stakes in Addington, were both impressive winners of their respective heats for two-vear-olds.

Ferrari began brilliantly and kept the pace on throughout to win easing down by two and a half lengths in a smart 2min 425. Kinradie. which trailed throughout held second comfortably. Star' Lady trailed three places back’ but sprinted up sharply to be handy on the turn and was not pressed to beat Magnifique by a length in 2min 45.45, the final 400 m in 32.25.

Smooth Charm (Smooth Fella—Charlotte Rose), which will have her first start in the Fitzgerald Stakes, made ground well enough for third.

Stormborn, which has drawn No. 13 in the Suburban Stakes at Addington, finished best from the trial to win the Cl and C2 trial.

The Tempest Hanover six-year-old led out then trailed Sir Ron from the 1800 m. but had too much speed for the runner over the last 200 m, running out an easy winner by a length in 3min 30.55, the last 400 m in 32.45.

Mighty Antrim, on the ballot for the Flying Fillies Stakes at Addington showed pleasing finishing speed to win the first maiden trial.

Mighty Antrim (Nardin's Byrd—Mighty Eagle) trailed three places back on the rails but finished quickly

when clear and won going away by two lengths from Track Series and My Idea in 3min 33.15, the final 400 m in 31.15.

Kanku showed plenty of promise in the first maiden event, breaking early, then improving three wide from the 900 m, but still having enough reserves to win by a neck in 3min 33.35.

Ad Anguem. forced to sit without cover throughout, led for the last 700 m and held on gamely to win the Cl-C4 heat for trotters.

An acceptor for the Hart Handicap at Blenheim, Ad Anguem came her last 800 m in 62.55, the final 400 m in 32s to narrowly beat Milford Coral, which was going easily at the line. Milford Coral will start in the Canterbury Crocket Handicap at Addington. Tail Light raced right away from a weak field of CO trotters to jog in, an easy 22 length winner of the minor trotting heat in 3min 36.6.

Earl Evander and Zebec again had the finish of the two-year-old trotter’s event to themselves. The Kevin Ryder-trained Earl Evander finished best to win going away by two lengths.

Zebec, a shade slow, improved quickly along the fence to lead 1600 m out but could not withstand Earl Evander's challenge over the final 100 m.

Black Barry, third throughout, held that placing with Zigfield fourth. CO Pacers. 2600 m —First heat: Kanku It J. Versteeg 1; Rose-
