Goodman acquires Winslow plant
The plant of Fletcher Lucerne, Ltd, at Winslow, near Ashburton has' been bought by the Goodman Group Ltd, the companies announced in a joint statement yesterday. .The plant will be known as N.Z. Sun-cured Products, Ltd, from March 1, and will be run by the Timaru Milling Company, Ltd a subsidiary of the Goodman Group. Both organisations said they were pleased with the hew arrangement for the Winslow pelletised stock feed plant. “It will enable the plant, operated by Fletchers for the last 14 years, to continue to
make a useful contribution to i both the local and the South Island economies.” ' : Mr Peter Allport the managing director of N.Z. Flour- : mills, Ltd, the Goodman Group parent company of Timaru Milling said the ac- i quisition would mean bene- i fits from rationalisation and , from some potential export sales. i Fletchers had difficulties in remaining competitive against major North American lucerne suppliers to the plant’s one traditional Japanese export market. Fletcher Lucerne said it welcomed the inclusion of
the Winslow plant in the more widely-based feeds activities of Timaru Milling. Mr Allport said the acquisition was not without risk in the export area, and he predicted a slightly lower production. But the Goodman Group believed it had some opportunities which might not have been available earlier, he said. “We have of course widespread local and South Island interests. We can get some extra benefit from rationalisation. We believe • that, from our point of view, it’s worth the effort on that basis."
