$1000 for rally winner

A cheque for at least $lOOO will greet the winner of this year’s Westland rally on the West Coast. Prize money for South Island rallies is usually very modest, because of the high costs of running events and lack of sponsorship, but the Westland Car Club has put a lot of effort into this year’s event. The main sponsors are Greymouth Motors and Firestone Tasman, and a group of Greymouth hotels, led by Kings, has also chipped in. The total prize fund will be almost $4OOO, and the over-all winner could take away more than $lOOO if he is fastest on most of the high-speed special stages. The event will start in Greymouth at midday on March 20 and end there at 6.16 p.m. after seven tough special stages, covering 166 km. Already the club has had inquiries from as far as Auckland, and does not envisage any problems filling the 90-car field. The rally will also be the second round of the 1982 Mainland rally series.
