Policeman on assault charge

PA Auckland A charge of assault against a police constable has been adjourned in the District Court at Auckland. lan Leslie Reeves, aged 27. of Invercargill, did not appear but counsel entered a not guilty plea on a charge of assaulting Elsa Jean Kaye in Auckland on September 12. Judge Bergin refused an application for suppression of the constable’s name. He said the public was entitled to know what had happened and it was important that rumour and suspicion be avoided. No more harm would be suffered by the defendant than in any other situation, he said. Judge Bergin adjourned the case until April 5.
