Trial on rape claim

f A man. aged 21. in the : District Court yesterday, was ■ committed for trial in- the High Court on a charge of ' raping a woman aged 20 i years in Hoon Hay on !, December 3. The defendant, John Richj ard Taylor, a builder’s labourer, had elected trial by jury and denied the charge. After a hearing of a day and a half, in which depositions and statements of 16 prosecution witnesses were

heard. Messrs M. B. Hayes and J. H. Christensen. Justices of the Peace, found there was a case to answer to the charge. They committed the defendant for trial in the High Court, and remanded him in custody pending trial, on a date to be fixed. His counsel (Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon) reserved his defence. Sergeant G. C. Jones prosecuted.
