C.A.R.T. call rejected

PA Auckland The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has rejected a call for the resignation of the member of Parliament for Tauranga, Mr K. R. Allen, who was recently convicted on two driving charges. “It is not normal in this country to punish people twice for the same offence,” Mr Muldoon said in a letter to the organiser of the Campaign Against the Road Toll, Mr H. G. Bickley. Mr Allen was convicted in

the District Court at Auckland last week on charges of driving with an excess breath-alcohol level and careless driving. Mr Bickley said in a letter replying to Mr Muldoon that the Prime Minister appeared to have misinterpreted the organisation’s request regarding Mr Allen. Mr Allen's “punishment" was not the reason why C.A.R.T. wrote to Mr Muldoon.

“The people of New Zeaf land must have as their > elected members of Parlia--1 ment only those people able to display and apply the highest qualities of leader- ; ship compatible with the promotion of community stand- [ ards of the highest order,” ' Mr Bickley said. He urged Mr Muldoon to ’ act on behalf of all caring i. New Zealanders and ask Mr Allen for his resignation from Parliament.
