Police to fly riot experts to Waitangi
PA Wellington Former members of the Blue Squad, the sister group of the Red Squad used during the Springbok tour, are being flown to Waitangi in case of trouble during next weekend’s Treaty celebrations. The men are part of a police section from Wellington which will be headed by a former Blue Squad commander, Inspector John Thurston.
They have been selected because of their experience in dealing with violent protest.
The men will be taking with them protective equipment — helmets, long batons and shields — used during the Springbok tour. The operations director at
national headquarters, Superintendent lan Mill, said yesterday that there was no such thing as the Blue Squad — it ceased to exist the day Operation Rugby did. The Whangarei police district commander, Superintendent R. P. Silk, said the events at the Auckland Harbour bridge would not lead to a reassessment of police plans for Waitangi. The police had already done a “considerable amount” of. evaluation, he said, in view of statements made by land protesters. Mr Silk said he only hoped common sense and levelheadedness would prevail and protesters would not try to provoke confrontations with the police.
