Exemptions from awards
Sir,—As a Christian employee I was most interested to read your article in “The Press” (January 21) concerning the trade unions and their forcing people to join their organisation. If unions were so great, people would join voluntarily and they would not have to be forced. I think Christianity is a must for everyone, but I would never think of forcing people to join my church or lead a Christian life. For too long we Christians have allowed ourselves to be persecuted in so many ways. Now it is truly time to stand up for our rights and the rights' of thousands of others. That is the right of free association. I, for one, will be ceasing my union membership forthwith, and I call on all other Christians and free-thinking people to do the same.—Yours, etc., JOAN MILLER. Nelson, • January 26, 1982.
