Lord of the Dance fastest at Trentham
Special correspondent Wellington The Verner stablemates, Givenchy and Settle Down, impressed when they had their final trial for the $40,000 George Adams at Trentham tomorrow with a fast 800 m on the track yesterday, but time honours went to Lord of the Dance, which was very quick. Lord of the Dance, from Riccarton, was in dashing form, recording 34.25ec for 600 m. which was even more creditable as the colt was a little slow from the start of his gallop. Lord of the Dance will run in the Telford’s Handicap tomorrow. Working on the course proper,-which was fast and the markers out in the middle of the track, Givenchy and Settle Down were among the first to work yesterday morning.
They were in full flight from the 800 m to post 46.85, the final 600 m in a smart 34.55. Givenchy dropped back about a length in the middle stages of the workout but was back on terms at the finish. David Peake will ride Givenchy tomorrow and Nigel Tiley will stay with Settle Down. The Douro Cup winner, Jon, the winner of ,his only four starts; will not start in the Kelburn Handicap. His trainer, Jim Gibbs, said Jon will be reserved for the $20,000 Rotorua Challenge Stakes (1900 m on Saturday, February 13. - Golden Rhapsody, Honest Promise and Anderil, other leading chances in the George Adams Handicap, all worked satisfactorily. Honest Promise ran 800 m in 48.25, the last 600 m in 365.
Anderil took 51s for a similar task, the 600 m in 36.95. Golden Rhapsody took 50s for 800 m, the 600 m in 36.55. - The Bill Sanders’ pair, Bound to Honour and Loughanure, galloped strongly. They worked from the 1600 m in Imin 425, the last 800 m in 48s and the final 600 m in 355. The Rotorua visitor, Elan Ryan, turned in a fine trial for the Kelburn Handicap. He took 48.55. for 800 m, the last 600 m in a smart 34.5 s and must be a leading chance after finishing second to Jon in the Douro Cup on Monday. Joyarty completed her preparation, for the Wellington Racing Club Handicap with 600 m on the plough in 38.55. A race rival, Rama, took 54s for 800 m on the course proper, the last ,600 m in 39.25.
