A nation of thieves?
PA Nelson New Zealand was rapidly becoming a nation of thieves, Judge Headifen said in the District Court at Nelson after hearing a case in which property stolen from cars had been shared among party guests. Before convicting two young men on charges connected with the thefts, the Judge said that the more he sat in court and dealt with matters of dishonesty, the more he believed New Zealand was rapidly becoming a nation of thieves.
On the night of January 15, the defendants and friends had driven round Nelson stealing items from about 12 to 15 cars. They then returned to the party, where the stolen goods were shared among the party-goers.
Both defendants. who pleaded guilty, were convicted and remanded on bail to February 9.
