ALONG THE KAIKOURA COASTLINE

The rugged beauty of the Kaikoura coastline is enhanced by the bird life which is attracted to the area. Although the more common birds are there in abundance, varieties which are more usually found far out to sea can also often be seen. The reasons are two-fold:— (1) A rich variety of sea food is born on the warm, sub-tropical currents coming from the north and on the cold, sub-Antarctic currents from the south, which converge just off the coast of Kaikoura. % (2) In this area, the Continental Shelf does not extend far out to sea, with the result that deepwater conditions are reproduced relatively'close to shore, encouraging birds that would not normally be seen close to land in such numbers and frequency. This abundance provides extensive opportunities for zoological and marine research. The University of Canterbury has established its Edward Percival Laboratory in the area.
